Two illustrations by the Quebec artist,
Ozias Leduc, were the inspiration for this virtual reality
program. These were among a number of illustrations that
first appeared in a French-language novel, Claude Paysan,
published in 1899 and written by Ernest Choquette (1862-1941).
The novel is set in Saint-Hilaire, then a village on the
River Richelieu not too far from the city of Montreal in
Quebec. Dr Choquette, as his title suggests, was the local
doctor and also for a time the mayor of Saint-Hilaire.
Although Claude Paysan provides the backdrop
for the virtual reality Saint-Hilaire, the scenes and characters
depicted in this virtual world are not taken directly from
the book. You can read the book itself to find out what
actually happens in the original story. It is available
in French on the Web at the following URL:

The two illustrations are to be found
between pages 82 and 83, and pages 158 and 159 of this version.
